If you are a teacher employed by the Ghana Education Service and are currently teaching, then I hope this information finds you. In other words, if you possess a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) certificate from one of the public Colleges of Education in Ghana, then you are the one.
Now, this is the information ; any in-service teacher under GES with a Diploma certificate from college is advised to undertake a Degree course to obtain a Degree certificate before it is late. Read on and I will explain why I am saying so.
First, the Ghana Association of Teachers (GNAT) revealed in their GNAT Hour show that the minimum qualification to teach in Ghanaian schools at the pre-tertiary level is a Degree. That is why GNAT together with the University of Cape Coast and the Ghana Education Service introduced the one — year top-up programmes for diploma holders. The initiative emanated from the former Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh during his tenure in office.
Also, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) will be running the top-up sandwich programme for a short while and eventually bring it to an end. From my estimation, the five, and four semesters sandwich programme being run by UCC and UEW will soon come to an end. This is because our Colleges of Education now award Degree in the various fields.
The 2021 batch will be the first to graduate with a Degree followed by subsequent year groups. So, a time is coming that these Degree sandwich courses will be needless.
I know you might feel pressured after reading this post,, but the good news is that Degree sandwich programmes will run for quite a long time before it comes to an end. Also, GNAT indicated that all teachers who obtained their Degree certificates but have not been upgraded due to the time of acquiring the certification will all be upgraded.
However, before you pursue your sandwich or regular course, do not forget to follow the new GES guidelines for further studies.
